The book analyzes the problem of economic differences, taking into account the countries of the European Union, in order to identify and describe the causes of this phenomenon. The reference point for the study of economic differences in the countries under consideration was GDP per capita. A review of the theories of growth and economic development allowed for the selection of economic indicators for the empirical (statistical) study of the problem of economic differences (such as: total employment rate, export of goods and services, economic growth, labor productivity and unit labor costs, patents filed, people with higher education related to science, expenditure on research and development, investment).
In addition to quantitative research, qualitative research was used, allowing for a broader identification of factors that may determine the sources of economic differences between countries. In this context, historical (important stages of economic history), cultural and religious conditions, as well as legal patterns, were taken into account. Linking quantitative economic indicators shaping the level of wealth of society (GDP per capita) with empirically immeasurable factors (historical conditions, legal and cultural patterns) was intended to objectively explain the phenomenon under study.
Thanks to its multidisciplinary/holistic approach to the issue of economic differences, the work can contribute to the discipline of economics and finance. The University of Gdańsk Publishing House guarantees the high quality of the publication and the reliability of the presented data. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the mechanisms governing the modern European economy.
