Professor Andrzej Paulo, the author of this publication, is an extremely meritorious figure for Polish science. For many years he headed the Department of Economic Geology and Deposit Protection, and his experience includes over twenty-five scientific and alpinistic-scientific expeditions. He led research expeditions in Mongolia and the Sahara, where he discovered iron ore and manganese deposits. His passion for the mountains led him to open new, difficult high mountain trails, including in the Karakoram, Andes and Alaska. He is the author and co-author of numerous textbooks, which proves his enormous contribution to the education of young geologists.

Since 2006, Professor Paulo has been leading the research of the Polish Scientific Expedition to Peru. Students take part in these expeditions, whose commitment is financially supported by the rectors of AGH. The main goal of the project is to create a national park or geopark that would include the Colca Canyon and the Valley of Volcanoes. This ambitious undertaking aims to protect the unique natural heritage of Peru and promote the sustainable development of the region.
