“Playboy” was more than just an erotic magazine – it co-created the architectural imaginarium of the second half of the 20th century. Residences, parties, tropical grottoes, glass-enclosed living rooms with bunnies, round beds, private jets, and clubs with secret rooms – these are just some of the elements of the pornotopia of the mass media era that “Playboy” created. The book analyzes these spaces as manifestations of a certain lifestyle and worldview.
The Cold War is a time of questioning the biopolitical regime, intense actions by feminist movements, the emergence of the birth control pill, as well as the development of post-industrial mechanisms of production and immaterial work. In this era, “Playboy” became a symbol of a certain vision of freedom and luxury that influenced architecture and culture.
Paul B. Preciado, a Spanish writer, philosopher, and art curator, lectured on the political history of the body, gender theory, and performance history at the University of Paris VIII. His interests include issues of identity, gender, architecture, and sexuality. Author of numerous texts and books, including “Testo Junkie. Sex, Drugs and Biopolitics in the Pharmacopornographic Era.”
Dorota Jędruch, translator and researcher, introduces the Polish reader to the context of this fascinating analysis. Her introduction allows for a better understanding of the significance of “Playboy” in a cultural and political context.
