HOMELESSNESS AND THE HOMELESS IN THE OPINION OF POLISH SOCIETY - SOCIAL ANALYSIS
The book "Homelessness and the Homeless in the Opinion of Polish Society" by Dr. Roland Dobrzeniecki-Łukasiewicz is a fascinating journey into the depths of social attitudes towards the problem of homelessness. The author analyzes how the "ordinary citizen" shapes his "view of the problem" based on information from the media, rumors and street observations. This publication, rich in statistical analyzes, also includes theoretical aspects of the influence of the media on the formation of attitudes.
- In-depth analysis of social attitudes towards homelessness.
- Influence of the media on shaping public opinion.
- Research on the knowledge and attitudes of Poles on the subject of homelessness.
- Shaping stereotypes and prejudices.
- Depiction of homelessness in the media.
- Shaping the language of speech and its impact on actions.
- Analysis of institutional and individual actions.
Through his research, the author reveals the knowledge and attitudes of Polish society on the subject of homelessness, contributing to the creation of group aversion, stereotypes and labeling. In this context, the depiction of homelessness and homeless people by the generally understood media is presented, thus conditioning the language of speech, which is responsible for actions shaped by the awareness determined by myths, stereotypes or even archaic reasoning omitting knowledge, and as a consequence, in extreme cases, leading to pathological and criminal behavior.
The problem of homelessness and people in the crisis of homelessness was addressed by Dr. Roland Dobrzeniecki-Łukasiewicz in the book "Homelessness and the Homeless in the Opinion of Polish Society" both in the context of institutional actions and individual attitudes. This approach accurately shows the shaping of aid activities in the context of social approval and social sensitivity. In this sense, social sensitivity is an important variable that directly relates to social attitudes. The author presents the above by giving the example of the implementation of the social project "Housing First", which on the one hand is a very necessary project addressed to homeless people in the form of offered apartments that are to be the basic tool for overcoming homelessness. On the other hand, as a society, we are faced with the problem of a lack of housing for "non-homeless" people, i.e. those functioning in the realities of their social roles, but who cannot afford their own apartment.
The author of the study directly points to the possibility of one group developing aversion to the other. The implementation of this project may create social antagonisms and increase the scale of aversion of "housed" people towards the homeless, which is not positive in the current situation - which is also confirmed by the study by Dr. Dobrzeniecki-Łukasiewicz - but rather is based on stereotypes, prejudices and antagonisms often caused by occurring crises. This book is a must-read for sociologists, social workers, students and all those interested in the issues of homelessness and social exclusion. The publication of the Scientific Publishing House PWN from 2023 is a solid dose of knowledge and reflection on one of the most pressing problems of today's society.
