The book "Bieszczady. Where devils, Hutsuls, Ukrainians" is a collection of landscape stories that take the reader on a journey through one of the most fascinating regions of Poland. The author, a lover of the Bieszczady Mountains, shares his memories of travels through this region, describing the most interesting places and events that took place here. This book is not only a guide to the Bieszczady Mountains, but also a story about the people who lived and created the history of this region.

The author describes his first encounter with the Bieszczady Mountains, when as a child he went to a colony in Dobre. There he encountered the mysterious and tragic atmosphere of the displaced villages, whose few inhabitants remembered the recent struggles with the UPA. As a student, he wandered through the Bieszczady Mountains, completed a tour guide course and began to lead camps, where we carried out landscape inventories and later renovated abandoned cemeteries. Deep in his memory remained the trip to the Bieszczady bag, which in the 1970s was an inaccessible border area.

The first cemetery camp in 1987 was full of extraordinary discoveries of stonework in the villages of Bystre and Michniowiec, found only in this part of our Bieszczady Mountains. Hikes through the Hoczewka Valley allowed us to learn about the history hidden deep under the rubble of oblivion. The remains of the castle ruins of the Balowie and Fredrów in Hoczwa or the traces of the earth embankments of the castle in Baligrod testified to hundreds of years of history of these lands. In Cisna, located already on the Solinka, we discovered the remains of a large furnace, a forge and forges that formed a hut belonging to Jacek Fredro in the first half of the 19th century. In Jabłonki we saw the place of death of General Karol Świerczewski, shrouded in a mystery that has not been solved to this day. The times of displacement and struggles with the UPA are one of the essential themes of this story.

This book is a must-read for all lovers of the Bieszczady Mountains and Polish history. Thanks to it, you can better get to know this fascinating region and understand its rich and complicated history. It is an ideal companion both for those who already know the Bieszczady Mountains and for those who are just planning their first trip to these picturesque mountains.
