Harro Harring (1798–1870) is an extremely colorful and controversial figure. Born a Dane, German-speaking writer, and by choice a Pole, he was both a popular poet and a brave fighter for the freedom of nations. His life was a constant struggle against adversity and persecution by the Tsarist police. At the age of almost 30, he became a lancer, an officer of the personal guard of Grand Duke Constantine in Warsaw.

In return for his excellent service, he was offered the position of an international Tsarist spy in European courts. When he indignantly refused, he was offered an alternative: dungeons in Siberia. Without hesitation, he fled Warsaw, pursued almost to the end of his life. In every country where he appeared, the Tsarist ambassadors demanded his expulsion. Harro Harring reached Rio de Janeiro, North America, and even Australia. Often under assumed names, always fighting.

First with a double weapon, i.e. with a weapon and a pen; repeatedly wounded and injured, for 34 years with a pistol bullet in his chest, which got stuck there as a result of a duel. Then he only used the pen. His stirring poems were loved on all continents; many of them he dedicated to the heroes of the November Uprising and the oppressed Poland. In love with a beautiful Polish aristocrat, he became forever associated with her homeland and took the Polish surname Kazimirowicz.

Krystyna Szayna-Dec, using excellent Polish and relying only on facts, wrote a biography that reads like an adventure novel. This is the story of a man who became a symbol of the fight for freedom and independence, and whose fate has forever become part of the history of Poland and Europe.
