The F-4F Phantom II is an American, two-seat, supersonic long-range interceptor fighter powered by two jet engines. Designed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy, it quickly gained recognition in the US Air Force and the Marine Corps. The Phantom II was one of the key aircraft during the Vietnam War, entering combat operations in December 1964 in the colors of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron ("Triple Nickel").

Initially, both seats in the cockpit were occupied by pilots, but later the rear pilot was replaced by a weapon systems officer. The Phantom was a versatile aircraft: it functioned as a fighter, tactical bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It participated in many clashes with MiG aircraft, including the famous Operation Bolo. Despite advanced technology and great firepower, the F-4 suffered heavy losses, both from enemy aircraft and anti-aircraft defense from the ground. The machine could carry over 8,400 kg of weapons, and its subsequent versions were increasingly better equipped: from radars, through guided missiles, to the M61 Vulcan cannon in later versions.
