DRAMAS BY ELIAS CANETTI

Discover the fascinating world of dramas by Elias Canetti, a Nobel laureate, in the first Polish edition presenting the entirety of his dramatic output. The volume includes three plays: "The Wedding", "Comedy of Vanity", and "Until the Last Moment", translated by the excellent Ryszard Wojnakowski. Do these texts, created in different eras, still resonate with contemporary audiences? Do they say something essential about the human condition and social mechanisms?

  • First presentation of Canetti's entire dramatic output in Polish.
  • Excellent translation by Ryszard Wojnakowski.
  • Three plays in one volume: "The Wedding", "Comedy of Vanity", "Until the Last Moment".
  • Reckoning with society and the mechanisms of power.
  • Relevance despite the passage of time.
  • Inspiring introduction by Paweł Zarychta.

"The Wedding", written in 1932, is a sharp satire on facade morality, revealed during the title ceremony. The wedding ritual becomes a pretext for showing conflicts and hidden motivations of characters of different social statuses. The play aroused outrage among critics and audiences during its premiere in 1965, which proves its provocative nature and uncompromising approach to social issues.

"Comedy of Vanity", created in 1933-1934, takes us to a state where the authorities prohibit the use of mirrors and the possession of photographs, punishing it with death. This is a dystopian vision of a society in which vanity and the pursuit of self-admiration are so strong that they become a threat to public order. Canetti insightfully analyzes the mechanisms of control and manipulation, showing how power can use human weaknesses to achieve its goals.

"Until the Last Moment" from 1956 is a drama set in the distant future, in which humanity has overcome the fear of death. Canetti explores the consequences of such a state of affairs, wondering whether a life without the awareness of transience becomes more valuable, or on the contrary - loses its meaning. This is a deep reflection on the human condition and its relationship with time and eternity.

Elias Canetti, Nobel laureate, is one of the most important writers of the 20th century. His work is characterized by deep humanism, insightful social analysis and an original style. Canetti's dramas are not only literary masterpieces, but also an important testimony of the era and a universal message for future generations. His texts seem to gain relevance, and the author with his intuition and diagnoses significantly surpasses his own era. Eperons-Ostrogi Publishing House is proud to present this unique collection of dramas, which will surely interest every lover of literature and theater.
