A World of Their Own. Female Artists Against Adversity is a moving study of the centuries-long struggles of talented women who faced exclusion from a male-dominated environment but continued to work tirelessly to gain recognition and professional competence. The author, Frances Borzello, takes readers on a journey through the lives and works of female artists who had to overcome numerous obstacles to make their mark in the art world. The book contains over 200 color reproductions that allow for a closer look at the works of these extraordinary women.

The book begins with the Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana, and then presents the changing social conditions and circumstances in which female artists operated. The 17th-century painters Artemisia Gentileschi and Judith Leyster were successful in depicting motifs from the lives of women, as were the 18th-century masters Angelika Kauffmann and Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, who took up the theme of motherhood. In the 19th century, further changes occurred when enthusiastic young painters such as Mary Cassatt and Maria Bashkirtseff attended art schools and participated in exhibitions.

In the 20th century, ideas of equality entered the art world, and artists such as Augusta Savage, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, and Mona Hatoum followed a path that today leads talented women to their rightful place in art history. This book is not only a story of difficulties, but above all of the strength, determination, and passion that allowed female artists to create their own unique world.
