Bachantka on a Panther is the first historical novel in the history of literature about the sculptor Theodor Erdmann Kalide, called the Silesian Michelangelo. He was born in 1801 in Chorzów in Upper Silesia. His talent was quickly noticed and he was sent, as an eighteen-year-old, on a scholarship to the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin.
There he created his great works, such as Sleeping Lion, Boy with a Swan and Girl with a Lyre, but above all Bachantka on a Panther, one of the most magnificent, bold and controversial sculptures in the history of art. It emanated such powerful sensuality and eroticism that it ruined the career and the entire previous work of the great sculptor for many years, while his model was cursed and condemned to oblivion.
How much love for a woman did you have to have to risk your entire career to pay homage to her beauty in marble? How much did you have to trust a beloved man to dare to pose for him for such a daring sculpture? Which of them risked more? Mid-19th century, Berlin. Art and love. A sculpture that became a legend.
