Gdańsk, a city with a rich history, located on the Gdańsk Bay, near the mouth of the Vistula River to the Baltic Sea, was for centuries the richest city of the Republic of Poland. Its beginnings date back to the times of Mieszko I, who in the years 967-72 conquered this part of Pomerania. In the place of today's Long Market, at the fork of the Motława River flowing into the Dead Vistula, he founded a stronghold with a seaport. The name of the settlement `Gyddanzyc`, recorded for the first time in the `Life of St. Adalbert`, who visited Gdańsk before the Christianizing expedition to Prussia, came from the word that the Prussians used to describe the Motława River. Its core `gd` meant mud or moisture. During the Piast dynasty, Gdańsk's relations with Poland were quite turbulent. The fragmentation of the state did not favor maintaining ties with Pomerania. Only after the death of the last Pomeranian duke Mściwoj II Gdańsk passed into the hands of Przemysł II...
