Gottlob Herbert Bidermann, a German soldier whose memoirs from the Eastern Front rival classics of the genre such as Sajer's "The Forgotten Soldier" or Happego's "Moscow Stop". His survival of the war is a true miracle, given his numerous wounds and the fact that most of his comrades-in-arms rested in the endless Russian graves. Despite the cruelty of the Eastern Front, the author felt a strange attraction to it, returning there despite the possibility of taking safer positions. The adrenaline he experienced there addicted him, not allowing him to be elsewhere.

Bidermann fought in Crimea, taking an active part in the capture of the Sevastopol fortress, as well as in the fighting near Leningrad. Finally, he defended East Prussia, wearing the legendary "Kurland" inscription on his arm, symbolizing the troops that never surrendered. Only the surrender of Germany forced them to raise the white flags. After the surrender, the author was sent to Russian camps for years, where, exhausted and on the verge of death, he returned to Germany.

In his memoirs, written after the war, Bidermann expresses a negative attitude towards Hitler and the then rulers in Germany. However, how sincere these confessions were remains a mystery. This book is not only an account of the atrocities of war, but also an attempt to come to terms with the past and understand the motivations that guided the author in those difficult times. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of World War II and the fate of ordinary people in its vortex.
