"Trying to define or assign Hatif's poetry to any category (which I didn't succeed in anyway, but that's a peculiarity of the literary scholar), I remembered the well-known opinion of Julian Przyboś that "poetry is the unity of vision condensed into a maximum of pictorial allusions and a minimum of words." Although, of course, it is absurd to include Janabi in the avant-garde movement, this definition seemed extremely appropriate to the work that is the subject of these considerations. Hatif's poetry is primarily a vision, not to say sometimes visionary, which is particularly evident in The Royal Tract (At-Tarik al-Ma-laki [...]). And I dare not classify his work into any of the currents known from textbooks. This may be precisely because he remains between Polishness and Arabness.
Hatif Janabi is a poet, writer, essayist, translator of Polish and Arabic literature, theater scholar, employee of the Department of Arabic Studies and Islam Studies at the University of Warsaw. He deals with Arabic and Polish language, literature and culture. He lectured in Algeria in the years 1985-1988, worked as a Visiting Scholar in the USA (1993-1994). He is a laureate of many Polish and foreign awards, including The University of Arkansas Press Annual Award for Literature (1995) and the ZAi KS award for translations of Polish literature into Arabic (2003), member of the Polish Pen Club. He publishes his works in Polish and Arabic, many of them have been translated into other languages, including English, French, Russian and Czech.
