Henri-Irne Marrou, a French antiquity scholar, professor at the Sorbonne since 1945, is the author of this impressive work published in 1948. It is a description of ancient education over fifteen centuries: from the 10th century BC to the 5th century AD. By "education" is meant primarily education, although, according to the author, it only appeared when the "culture of the warrior" passed into the "culture of the scribe", the culture of writing, and the "education" based on the ideal of physical fitness took the form of intellectual skills.
This millennium and a half period began and ended with "dark ages", periods without a book: first in pre-Homeric Greece, and then in Christian Europe after the fall of ancient Rome. It was not until the Carolingian period that education was revived, this time Christian. Marrou describes in detail the method of school education, the methods of work of teachers of individual disciplines: the science of writing, mathematics, music, rhetoric, and also, to an ever lesser extent, physical culture.
Despite the detail, the extraordinarily vivid and clear narration allows you to feel the epoch, to recognize its "pulse", which the author finds with unerring intuition. The political message of the book, as it was partly created during World War II, proclaims that despite the barbaric phases of history, modern man remains the heir of ancient classicism. This book is a fascinating journey through ancient education systems and their impact on modern civilization. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to delve into the roots of our culture and understand how minds were shaped in past eras. Discover the history of education that shaped the world!
