Hokusai, born as Tokitarō, began his artistic journey at the age of six, and his talent developed throughout his long and prolific life. He died at the age of 89, and his designs for illustrated books were published posthumously. The album traces each of the artist's creative phases, from the actor portraits with which he began, to the 1,300 designs he made in his later years under the name Manji. It's a real treat for Japanese art lovers!
The monograph presents both well-known and lesser-known, rarely reprinted works, offering an unparalleled variety of themes and techniques. From a landscape of the Kirifuri Waterfall to large-format maps of the Tōkaidō and Kisokaidō roads and the Bōsō Peninsula; spreads of illustrated books, from his sensual, imaginative erotica (Shunga) to drawing manuals such as the fifteen-volume Hokusai manga; and numerous depictions of animals, from his various series of woodcuts depicting birds and flowers to his later hanging scrolls depicting ducks amid a flowing stream and a tiger suspended in the snow.
This edition is the result of a large-scale campaign of new photographs, which were obtained from over 100 institutions around the world. These include museums and collections from Europe and the United States to Japan, such as the Hiei Shrine in Kisarazu, where a surviving panel depicting a boar hunt at the foot of Mount Fuji was re-photographed for this edition.
The "Hokusai Maximus" album is a true feast for the eyes and intellect, showcasing the richness and diversity of the work of one of Japan's greatest artists. Whether you are an experienced art lover or just starting your adventure with Japanese culture, this book is sure to delight and inspire you.
