The Headless One ritual, studied in this publication, has been one of the most important texts of contemporary magic for 160 years. Originating from the Papyri Graecae Magicae, it was first published by Charles Wycliffe Goodwin in 1852. It was quickly adapted by the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley, forming the core of their ritual arsenal. More recently, it has been adopted by the Temple of Set. The ritual has been known by various names, such as The Bornless One, Liber Samekh, or Preliminary Invocation. A key element giving effectiveness to contemporary magic, its ancient roots have long remained a closed book.
Only a small part of the papyri was available to adepts of the early magical revival, and large delays prevented later students from further research. Few suspected that this ritual was part of an important genre within the ancient ritual corpus. An important study on this ritual was published in 1991 by Jake Stratton-Kent in the 6th issue of the long out-of-print Equinox/BJT. This booklet is a comprehensively revised and updated development of this groundbreaking study on the Headless One ritual.
