Jan Michalik is one of the most outstanding Polish theater researchers of the 19th and 20th centuries. His scientific achievements are widely known and respected, and each book he authors arouses great interest. Professor Michalik is a historian of Krakow and Galician stages, a researcher of drama and acting, staging and theater as an institution. He dealt with peasant theater in Galicia, amateur theater, Jewish theater, cabaret and music in the theater. He was a teacher and guardian of many current scientists.
Conversations about the Krakow Theater is a collection of scattered texts, mostly already published, but in niche publications, collective books or magazines that are not always easily accessible. Facilitating readers and researchers' access to these dissertations is the first, simplest argument for publishing this collection. The second is the presentation of an excellent research workshop, which future generations of theater scholars can and should learn from. It is in such a set of larger and smaller texts that it is perfectly clear how significant scientific value can be found in dictionary entries, contributions, emendations, comments, supplements - even in the scope of seemingly known and researched topics (such as Wyspiański or Modrzejewska). Professor Michalik (author of extensive monographs) is also a master in this field.
This volume proves that Jan Michalik is still actively filling research gaps in Polish theater studies. This book is not only a collection of articles, but also a testimony of passion and commitment to researching the history of the Krakow Theater. It is a must-read for anyone interested in culture and art, as well as for students and theater researchers. Thanks to this book, one can better understand the richness and diversity of the Krakow theater scene and appreciate Jan Michalik's contribution to its development and popularization.
