Jan Sarkander (1576-1620), born in Skoczów, witnessed the tragic mixing of religious and political order. The introduced principle of "cuius regio, eius religio" led to intolerance and hatred. Nevertheless, the parish priest from Holeszów, while dying, prayed for forgiveness for his tormentors, demonstrating an extraordinary attitude of mercy.

Sarkander, forced to reveal the secret of confession, remained silent until the end. Cardinal Joachim Meisner called him a "great gift from God" for an era of crisis of the sacrament of reconciliation.
