The biography of Pius VII by Jean-Marc Ticchi is a fascinating journey through the life of a man who, against all odds, became the head of the Catholic Church in one of the most turbulent periods in European history. Barnaba Chiaramonti, a Benedictine monk, Bishop of Tivoli, then of Imola, cardinal close to Pope Pius VI, in 1800 is unexpectedly elevated to the See of Peter at the conclave in Venice, which has been going on for three months.

His pontificate was marked by a clash with post-revolutionary France. Already as a bishop, he had to face the French invasion of Italy (1796-1797). When he became Pope, he signed a concordat with France in 1801, and three years later he took part in Napoleon's coronation in Paris. But when the emperor attacked the spiritual independence of the papacy, his attitude could be summed up in two words: non possumus! He paid for it with long exile and isolation in Savona and Fontainebleau (1809-1814), but his unwavering stance against Napoleon and numerous travels through France brought him, after the fall of the Napoleonic empire, enormous, unprecedented fame throughout Europe. He fought with secular power for the independence of spiritual power and can be an example for today's church hierarchy.

This biography, based on the latest scientific research and source texts, sheds new light on the figure of the Pope who led the Church during both the first Roman Restoration (1801-1809) and the second (1814-1830). Pius VII appears as a figure full of vigor and moderation, whose decisions in the relations of the Apostolic See with European powers played a key role in the history of the 19th century. Jean-Marc Ticchi, a French researcher and historian, specialist in the history of papal diplomacy, the role of the Apostolic See in international relations and the cult of the Holy Father in the 19th and 20th centuries.
