Andrzej, an experienced war correspondent, wanted to show his wife Afghanistan, a country full of contrasts and unique beauty. Ela, a shamanic soul full of love for gongs and medicinal herbs, faced the challenge of traveling into the unknown. Together, in an old Mercedes MB 100, they set off along the ancient Silk Road, which in the 70s was traveled by colorful buses full of flower children seeking adventure, freedom and love.
The authors wanted to see the Panjshir Valley, never conquered by foreign troops, and Bamian, a Buddhist sanctuary destroyed by Islamic radicals. They wanted to find old friends whom Andrzej had met during his reporting trips to war zones. However, before reaching their destination, they had to overcome serpentines in the mountains of Armenia and cross borders where every foreigner was greeted with suspicion. The reader experiences hospitality and deception with them, and Ela faces her fear of heights with the help of an old shaman. What happens when the camper's brakes fail on a mountain road? Will they reach Kabul before the Taliban take it over?
This book is not only a travelogue, but also a deep reflection on the human condition, the search for the meaning of life and the courage to realize dreams. The authors take us on a journey that will be remembered for a long time, inspiring us to discover the world and overcome our own limitations. It is a story about love, friendship and unwavering faith in the power of the human spirit. This book is a real gem for all lovers of travel, history and culture.
