Tadeusz Żeleński (Boy) is an extremely important figure for Polish culture and literature. His work, although often controversial, always provoked thought and discussion. He was not only a literary critic, but also a translator, publicist and doctor. His activity had a huge impact on the development of Polish culture and language. The book "Classic against Will" is a tribute to this outstanding man and an attempt to understand his legacy.

The volume presents texts by researchers from various scientific centers, representing various methodologies of reading, writing and discussing literature, endowed with various scientific temperaments and using various styles, who looked at the not yet sufficiently known aspects of Boy's biography as well as his ideological and artistic legacy. Each part contains revealing texts that do not stop at exploring Boy in directions consistent with the current state of research, and therefore predictable, but introduce this research to truly new paths.

The texts collected in the volume once again make us aware that Boy - contrary to critical and historical-literary commonplaces - as is the case with classics, even "against his will", is by no means an easy author. On the contrary: such a conclusion could only be formulated on the basis of a superficial knowledge of his writings. Their contextualized reading reveals Żeleński as a much more complex, ambiguous, and at times even enigmatic figure. The open composition of the whole, devoid of a summarizing coda, indicates the possibility of adding new installments in the future, perhaps not only under the pretext of subsequent round anniversaries.
