Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) is an outstanding poet, a romantic bard, often called the Slavic bard or the poet of transformations. He was born into a petty noble family, and spent his childhood and youth in Nowogródek and Vilnius. Next to Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasiński, he is considered the greatest poet of the Polish Romantic era. He was an excellent creator of romantic drama, author of ballads, poetic novels, the drama Forefathers' Eve, and above all the national epic Pan Tadeusz. His remains rest in the crypt on Wawel.
The volume of Poetry published in Vilnius in 1822 was recognized as a manifesto of Polish Romanticism. In the preface and the ballad Romanticism, the poet included a new program of literature, referring to feelings, folk beliefs and the presence of elements of nature and the environment. The Odessa Sonnets and the Crimean Sonnets are the opposite of traditional sonnets, in which love and philosophy were the main themes. Mickiewicz emphasizes metaphysical descriptions of nature and the internal experiences of the characters. This collection includes, among others, the works: To M***, Romanticism, Steppe of Akkerman, Redoubt of Ordona, On the Alps in Splügen 1829, Vision.
