CREATIONS AND DEFORMATIONS OF ALEKSANDER FREDRO
Discover the fascinating world of Aleksander Fredro's work, where laughter intertwines with seriousness, and irony with tenderness. This book is a journey through a labyrinth of games, transformations, and reflections on 19th-century Poland, divided by partitions. Get to know Fredro anew, not only as a classic but as an unruly artist, a revealer of history, and a thought-provoking creator.
- Multi-layered analysis of known and forgotten works by Fredro
- Unveiling of emotional and intellectual tensions accompanying Fredro
- Analysis of issues of censorship, women's emancipation, and obscene works
- Discussion of the reception of the master's works and correspondence with Wincenty Pol and Stanisław Moniuszko
- New perspectives on interpreting Fredro's work
- Modernization of Fredro as a writer of romantic modernity
"Creations and Deformations. Aleksander Fredro's Metamorphoses of the World" is a collection of texts that analyze both known and forgotten works by Fredro, revealing their extraordinary multi-layered nature. The authors draw attention to the emotional and intellectual tensions accompanying Fredro - from memories of the Battle of Waterloo, through comedic genius, to bold experiments with form and subject matter. Among the issues raised are censorship, women's emancipation, and obscene works that circulated underground for years. There was also a discussion of the reception of the master's works and artistic and ideological correspondence with Wincenty Pol and Stanisław Moniuszko.
The second volume in the "Romantyzm Krajowy" series, edited by Małgorzata Łoboz and Olga Taranek-Wolańska, opens new perspectives for the reader and invites them to jointly rediscover Fredro. The comedy writer appears here not only as a monumental classic but also as an unruly artist, a revealer of history, and a thought-provoking creator - even today, in the 21st century. The collected works, synthesizing the existing knowledge about the numerous aspects of the work and the contexts of the great comedy writer's work, at the same time set the directions for reinterpretation in future literary-historical research.
I would particularly like to emphasize the revalorizing potential of the research approaches gathered under one cover, which modernize - in various aspects - Fredro's work. From the studies and sketches gathered in the volume, the image of the author of Dożywocia as a writer of romantic modernity, willingly reaching for the tools of the ironist and creator of grotesque views, a romantic par excellence and not a creator thrown into the 19th century who prolongs the life of Stanisław's comedy, sometimes also a precursor of later aesthetic choices, begins to emerge more and more clearly.
