Krzysztof Trojanowski's book offers a comprehensive presentation, analysis and interpretation of the issue indicated in the title "Film in Occupied Poland". The author takes into account both the positions realized at that time and the fate of their authors, not only directors, but the entire pleiad of co-creators with actors at the forefront. To an equal extent, Dr. Krzysztof Trojanowski is interested in the repertoire of cinemas at that time (distribution, exploitation, advertising) and the audience to whom this carefully selected repertoire was proposed. It is, of course, the Polish audience.

By revising these popular beliefs, Dr. Trojanowski did not take the position of a moralist who would condemn or absolve the attitudes of cinema-goers at that time. The author wrote his book from the perspective of a film historian who, based on sources, reconstructs the state of affairs primarily in the area of facts. They may be interpreted differently, but above all they must be stated and verified. Their moral assessment depends on too many factors to apply one measure, one criterion to situations which, although they seem identical, are fundamentally different.

The publication is pioneering in nature and aims to confront stereotypes, such as the common belief in empty cinemas or the exclusively low artistic level of the films shown. It contains an accurate characterization of the film repertoire in the General Government (feature films and propaganda documentaries, including chronicles), information on the functioning of cinemas, audience behavior, small acts of sabotage and attempts to boycott cinemas. The author describes the wartime fate of the screen stars. In addition, the reader will find numerous interesting facts, data from the occupation press: both open and underground, stories of unrealized plans, previously unpublished iconographic materials.
