The first years after Poland regained independence were a period of searching for a national style in architecture. Attempts were made to refer to classical, manor house ideals, emphasizing national identity and the prestige of the reborn state. At the same time, in Western Europe, modernism was gaining more and more popularity, promoting functionality and minimalism in form.

Modernism quickly reached Poland, bringing with it elegance and simplicity. Buildings with asymmetrical facades, large windows and flat roofs began to appear in Polish cities, and Łódź became one of the main centers of this movement. Artists associated with the European avant-garde, such as Władysław Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro, created their works here, and outstanding architects designed buildings that still delight with their form.
