- History of a pioneer of psychoanalysis in Poland
Ludwig Jekels, a student of Freud, a psychiatrist from Lviv, and a New York psychoanalyst, presents in his essays his own approach to key concepts of psychoanalysis, such as guilt and pity. He interprets selected cultural and social phenomena and literary texts, using a classically psychoanalytic model of interpretation, based on the assumption that the meaning of a given cultural product should be explained by reconstructing the intra-familial psychic structure of its creator shaped by Oedipal relations.
This book testifies to Jekels' ability to combine the perspective of theoretical considerations with experiences gained during psychoanalytic therapy. It also gives an idea of his interpretative artistry. In his works on Shakespeare's dramas, he ventures interesting readings of the psychology of their main characters. Noteworthy in the collection are also the essays written jointly with Edmund Bergler on the drive dualism in dreams and the concepts of transference and love.
Ludwik Jekels was a pioneer of Freudian psychoanalysis in Polish medical and artistic-intellectual circles. Born in 1867 in Lviv, in an assimilated Jewish family, he attended Polish gymnasiums there. He made his first attempts at applying psychoanalytic therapy in his sanatorium in Bystra near Bielsko in Upper Silesia. At the same time, he conducted lively publishing activity in Polish medical journals and gave lectures.
