The book presents a scientific approach to the description of the most important and representative Calvaries in Poland, taking into account their temporal development. In addition to the well-known objects from the 17th century, such as Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Pakoska, or Wejherowska, lesser-known Calvaries from the 19th and 20th centuries are also described, e.g. Kalwaria Piekarska, Głotowska, or Ujska. The author also analyzes contemporary designs such as Kalwaria Gietrzwałdzka, Kodeńska, or Golgota Beskidów, showing their role in shaping national identity.
The use of communication theory allows us to show how complex and multi-layered the cultural text of the Calvaries is. They communicate in the language of space, being a system of spatial supports of cultural memory, in the language of plastic decoration and accompanying inscriptions, through consistent theatricalization and oralization of content programs, as well as in the language of gesture and body. The publication contains original photographic material, which is an integral part of the discourse.
The publication of the University of Warsaw Publishing House is an extremely valuable item for anyone interested in the history, art, and culture of Poland. Thanks to its unique approach and rich research material, the book is a valuable source of knowledge about Polish Calvaries and their significance in the national heritage.
