Mario-Henrique Leiria (1923-1980) was not only a writer, but also a prominent activist of the Portuguese surrealist movement. His life was full of controversy and political involvement, which was reflected in his work. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon, from where he was relegated in 1942 for his political views. In 1961, he was arrested along with a group of surrealists for preparing an alleged coup d'état called Operation Parrot, which was essentially a surreal happening. Released from custody without a verdict, he went into exile in Brazil, from where he returned taking advantage of the political thaw of the early 1970s. Leiria's writing is characterized by anarchism, surrealism and eclecticism, as well as a special fondness for absurdity and science fiction. For many years he wrote for Portuguese satirical magazines. He is known primarily as the author of Stories with Gin and Tonic and New Stories with Gin.
