The Iliad, or the Song of Troy, is a story about the Trojan War that has permanently entered the history of literature. Homer, to whom tradition attributes the authorship of the Iliad, is a figure surrounded by legends. Already the Greeks of the classical and Hellenistic periods did not have certain information about him there were many views as to his place of birth and life, with Ithaca, Smyrna, Pylos, Argos, Colophon, Athens and Chios being the most frequently mentioned. The Iliad, as the oldest and at the same time very extensive Greek written document, is one of the most important sources in the history of ancient Greece. The myths contained in it contain memories of historical events, and the detailed descriptions of the life of the Achaeans and Trojans presented by it constitute an extremely rich material.
The epic covers a period of approximately 49 days from the tenth and final year of the Trojan War. Wrath, goddess, sing of Achilles, son of Peleus... - thus begins the Iliad, whose main motif is the story of how the greatest Greek warrior Achilles in anger abandons the fight against the Trojans. Achilles asks his mother Thetis to beg Zeus to help the Trojans, and thus harm the Achaeans. Zeus sends Agamemnon a dream to induce him to storm Troy. However, the leader wants to do it by trickery, pretending to withdraw his troops. A battle ensues.
