Julian of Norwich, alongside St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa of Avila, is considered one of the most important mystics and theologians in the history of the Church. Living in 14th-century England, she experienced sixteen miraculous revelations in 1373 when she was convinced of her imminent death. After recovering, she devoted her life to contemplation and writing down her visions, which we know today as "Revelations of Divine Love."
This book is not only a record of mystical experiences, but above all a hopeful message about God's love and providence. Five centuries before St. Faustina Kowalska, Juliana proclaimed to the world the truth about the Father's mercy, which is greater than all sin and embraces all people. In her revelations, we also find an innovative view of the motherhood of God and the hope of salvation for every human being, which is an important contribution to the development of contemporary theology.
Her serene and comforting visions become particularly relevant and needed in today's times, full of anxiety and doubt. Like St. Faustina, who said, "Jesus, I trust in you," Juliana repeatedly said, "All will be well, for the Lord revealed it to her." This message of hope and trust in God's love is universal and timeless.
Excerpts from Julian of Norwich's visions are quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and Benedict XVI dedicated one of the catecheses to her during the general audience in 2010. The Pope emphasized that Juliana understood the main message for spiritual life: God is love, and only when we open ourselves completely and with full trust to this love and allow it to become the only guide of life, everything is transformed, we find true peace and true joy and become able to spread it around us.
