Oscar Wilde was primarily a playwright who found his greatest fulfillment in live speech. His best works stemmed from what he did best, which was talking. Wilde specialized in "small talk", which he elevated to an art form. In England, he is loved precisely for his dramas, and less for "Dorian Gray" or children's stories.
Wilde's dramas have been labeled "society plays": comedies "from society", salon plays, which does not mean that they are laudatory for the salon. Wilde loved social life and being where one is, he regretted it very much when he lost it, but he was enlightened enough to fully see "the whole side of ridicule" of moving in these circles. With his comedies, he erected a rather ambiguous monument to good London society. He loved these people, but he loved them from above, for which they paid him back beautifully in his time.
"The Plays" by Oscar Wilde is the first complete edition in Polish of his most important dramatic works. In addition to the four "comedies from society", it contains "Salome" translated from the original French, as well as unfinished works.
