Petr Král (born in 1941) is a Czech poet, prose writer, essayist, and translator whose work remained inaccessible in his homeland for a long time. His mentors were Milan Kundera and Vratislav Effenberger, which influenced his unique writing style. Král, fascinated by film, photography, jazz, and Czech and French surrealism, created texts that could only be legally printed and published in the Czech Republic after 1989. His emigration lasted from 1968 to 2006.
"Basic Concepts" is a collection of lyrical, essayistic prose in which the spirit of Czech grotesque, Kafkaesque humor, and surreal revelation harmoniously merges with the French, new-wave esprit. Zbigniew Machej, the translator, aptly describes these works as an example of a harmonious combination of various artistic currents. Král describes the human world in an insightful, unconventional, and dynamic way. His works, which defy clear categorization, are closest to the technique of photomontage or mosaic.
This edition of "Basic Concepts" has been expanded to include selected texts from the volume "Arco and Other Prose" (2005) and previously unpublished works. Thanks to this, the reader has the opportunity to delve even deeper into the fascinating world of Petr Král's work. This book is not only a collection of texts, but above all a journey through a unique perspective on reality, full of humor, irony, and deep reflections.
The State Publishing Institute, which published this book, guarantees high editorial quality and attention to detail. This is a must-read for all lovers of Czech and European literature who are looking for more than just entertainment in books.
