Discover a fascinating journey through time and space with the debut novel by Olga Tokarczuk, the winner of the International Booker Prize. Travel to 17th-century France, where Huguenots seek a new homeland and unusual travelers head to the Pyrenees in search of a mysterious Book. This youthful novel, written 30 years ago, is a true treasure trove of motifs that Olga Tokarczuk developed in her later, award-winning works. Is the world ready for the discovery of the Book?
In 17th-century France, during the reign of the Sun King, Catholicism becomes the only legal religion. Huguenot groups, persecuted for their faith, travel the country in a desperate attempt to reach the north, where they hope to find a new homeland and protection from persecution. At the same time, a group of unusual travelers, traveling in the opposite direction - to the south - watch the outcasts from the windows of an elegant carriage. Each of them left Paris for a different, personal reason, and their fates intertwine on this extraordinary journey.
Among the travelers is Weronika, a courtesan abandoned by her fiancé, who is looking for a new meaning in life. She is accompanied by Markiz, an eccentric aristocrat dedicated to alchemy, who believes that he will find the key to the transformation of matter in the Book. There is also de Berle, a wealthy man with both feet on the ground, who wants to acquire the Book for his own material benefits. Gauche, a mute coachman whose only companion is a faithful yellow dog, joins them. This adventurous journey, full of unexpected twists and turns, can change not only their fate, but also the course of history of all mankind.
Their destination is the Pyrenees, where in a hard-to-reach mountain gorge, within the walls of a small, forgotten monastery, the Book has been hidden for centuries. This ancient relic has the power to influence the future of the world, but is the world ready for the discovery of the Book? Is humanity ready for the knowledge and power that this mysterious work holds within it? Olga Tokarczuk seeks answers to these questions in her debut novel, which heralded her later literary success and international recognition.
