GENERATIONS AND POLISH CHANGES. 45 YEARS OF RESEARCH OVER TIME
The book "Generations and Polish Changes" is a fascinating journey through 45 years of research on social changes in Poland. The author analyzes the evolution of attitudes, values, and aspirations of two generations whose fates are intertwined with the turbulent history of the country. It is a unique look at the process of system transformation and building identity in the post-communist reality.
- Unique panel studies covering 45 years
- Comparative analysis of generations born in the Polish People's Republic and during the transformation period
- Insightful look at the processes of socialization and generational exchange
- Rich source of information about the changes in Polish society
- Modern approach to generational issues
Krystyna Szafraniec's book is a comprehensive dissertation analyzing unique panel studies in Poland. The value of this dissertation is primarily determined by the impressive research design. The studies cover a total of 45 years and were conducted in four successive phases in 1972–1979; 1987–1988; 1997–1998 and 2016–2017. Despite the gradual, inevitable "attrition" of the studied sample (generation 1957 and their children), unique results were obtained that allow tracking changes in the situation and views of the same parents and children over time and comparing parents and children.
This publication presents and analyzes unique longitudinal data on a national scale, which, due to the scope of the issues covered (the number and nature of information obtained) and the examined time horizon, surpass other longitudinal projects carried out in Poland, according to reviewers. An advantage of the work is the combination in one analysis of generationality in the sense of kinship and in the sense of the distinctness of social formations (without concentration on "political generations") - this, according to experts, is a modern and fruitful approach to generational issues.
The PWN Scientific Publishing House, known for its care for the high substantive level of publications, gives readers a work that is an invaluable source of knowledge for sociologists, historians, political scientists, and all those interested in social processes taking place in Poland over the past decades. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the mechanisms of social change and their impact on the lives of individuals and entire generations.
