From an early age, priest Janusz Gajda learned about the biographies of martyrs from the times of the Nazi occupation. After the war, the memory of local heroes was still alive in his hometown of Zawiercie. Preparing for his First Communion, he listened to the stories of the parish priest, the sacristan and the organist, recalling the parishioners murdered for their loyalty to the Homeland and the Church. He spoke with the family of his neighbor Zosia Lubaś, who died in Auschwitz at the age of 22, because earlier, during a court hearing, she refused to renounce the values she professed. For the young boy that Fr. Janusz was then, the stories he heard became a moving confession of faith. As he says: "I lived with these testimonies, drawn by the rich personality of holy people and heroes."

For many years of his priestly ministry, even during his missionary work in Zambia, he did not forget about the martyrs. When, in 2013, his teacher from Zawiercie moved to Krakow and gave him three volumes of testimonies, he realized that the stories mentioned should be written down. The result of his work is this book, which is a tribute to those who gave their lives for faith and Homeland. It is a story of the power of the spirit that survived even in the most difficult moments of history.
