The historical beginnings of Krakow are connected with the formation of the Polish state. In the 9th century, a defensive settlement was built on the Wawel Hill, protecting the surrounding settlements belonging to the Vistulan tribe. The Polan Prince Mieszko I probably conquered the areas inhabited by the Vistulans in 977 and took power here in 981. After his death, his son Bolesław Chrobry settled in Wawel.
