This work consists of two main parts. The first part is a thorough study of Victor and his Chronicle, in which a historical overview of the era is given, with particular emphasis on the Christological disputes that had a great impact on shaping the reality of the time. The author reconstructs Victor's biography and then analyzes the individual issues related to his work, which allows for a fuller understanding of the historical and theological context.
The second part of the work is nothing more than the text of the Chronicle, which has been provided with a Polish translation and an extensive historical commentary. This edition of the Latin source text is the first to take into account not only Spanish manuscripts but also lessons from Cardinal Deusdedit's Liber canonum, which seem to be more correct than the Spanish tradition. As a result, the reader gains access to the most reliable and complete version of the Chronicle, which is invaluable for researchers and history enthusiasts.
The Chronicle should be treated primarily as a work related to the history of the Church, where political events form the basic framework in which ecclesiastical events take place. However, Victor did not care about their precise dating, which poses a certain challenge for historians. In addition, the Chronicle is based on a very narrow source base, largely on the Greek Church History of Theodorus Lector, which also influences its interpretation. The author's undisguised involvement in the dispute he describes distorts much information and models the past in such a way as to obtain from his readers the expected attitude towards controversial issues.
