RELIGIOUS STUDIES IN THE PPR - HOW MUCH SCIENCE, HOW MUCH IDEOLOGY

The publication "How Much Science, How Much Ideology" is a collection of articles resulting from the 2017 conference organized by the Institute of National Remembrance in Krakow and the Institute of Religious Studies of the Jagiellonian University. The study is contributory in nature and points to problems and research issues related to the functioning and development of religious studies in the Polish People's Republic. In post-war Poland, the communist authorities treated research on religion and religious phenomena instrumentally, using it to secularize society and limit the influence of the Church. The development of religious studies as an independent scientific discipline was hindered, and the environment of religious scholars, research institutes and academic didactics were subject to ideologization and instrumentalization. The publication "How Much Science, How Much Ideology" is an important contribution to research on this period, presenting an interdisciplinary view on the development of religious studies in the Polish People's Republic.

The study addresses the issues of legal and political conditions for the development of religious studies, institutions involved in disseminating and shaping this discipline in a Marxist interpretation, as well as the profiles of selected religious scholars and research areas.
