In post-war Poland, the communist authorities treated research on religion and religious phenomena instrumentally, using it to secularize society and limit the influence of the Church. The development of religious studies as an independent scientific discipline was hindered, and the environment of religious scholars, research institutes and academic didactics were subject to ideologization and instrumentalization. The publication "How Much Science, How Much Ideology" is an important contribution to research on this period, presenting an interdisciplinary view on the development of religious studies in the Polish People's Republic.
The study addresses the issues of legal and political conditions for the development of religious studies, institutions involved in disseminating and shaping this discipline in a Marxist interpretation, as well as the profiles of selected religious scholars and research areas. The publication contains twelve articles grouped into three thematic blocks, which allows for a comprehensive understanding of the discussed issue. The authors of the publication, representing various fields of science, undertook the analysis of the functioning of religious studies in the Polish People's Republic, drawing attention to its ideological entanglements and attempts to create an authentic scientific discipline.
The publication "How Much Science, How Much Ideology" is a valuable study for historians, religious scholars, philosophers and lawyers interested in the issues of religious studies in the Polish People's Republic. The book is a valuable source of knowledge about the ideologization of science in post-war Poland and attempts to create an independent scientific discipline under conditions of political oppression. It contributes to deepening knowledge about the functioning of science in the communist system and the role of religion in society.
