Get to know Roman Shukhevych, an extremely controversial figure in the history of Ukraine and Poland. On the one hand, a Ukrainian hero, on the other, a ruthless criminal responsible for the genocide of Poles in Western Ukraine. This book is an attempt to understand how an intelligent person could become a terrorist.
In his book, Marek Koprowski seeks an answer to the question of how it came about that a member of a well-known intellectual family became a Ukrainian terrorist fighting the Polish state and then cooperating with German intelligence. The author presents his activities in Carpathian Ruthenia, which was a testing ground for the OUN, and discusses his participation in the creation of the Nachtigall battalion, which, according to the Ukrainian nationalists, was to be the foundation of their army. Shukhevych quickly subordinated both the OUN and the UPA. As a de facto dictator, he tried to act in such a way that he would not be responsible for anything. Decisions were formally made by someone else, such as the fictitious Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council.
The author proves how much deceit and crimes accompanied Shukhevych, using the example of the genocide of Poles in Lesser Poland, which he called "resettlements." It is also a testimony to the implemented policy of falsifying reality and blaming others. Shukhevych believed until the end in the outbreak of World War III, which led to the destruction of the Ukrainian nationalist movement. Soviet justice reached all those whose hands were stained with Polish blood.
Marek Koprowski, a writer, journalist and historian, deals with the fate of Poles in the East. He is the author of many books, including the "Volhynia" series, for which he received the Oskar Halecki Award. His work is based on available sources, documents, memories and accounts, especially Ukrainian ones, and aims to explain why the treatment of Shukhevych as a hero in Ukraine provokes objections in Poland. This book is an important contribution to understanding the complex Polish-Ukrainian history and the role of Roman Shukhevych in it.
