The PZL W-3 Sokół was developed as a successor to the Mil M-4 helicopter, based on the experience with the Mil Mi-2 machine. Initially, cooperation with the Mil plants was close, but over time PZL in Świdnik took the initiative in design and production. In the course of serial production, many development versions were created, both civilian and military, adapted to various tasks and needs.

Civilian versions include W-3 (the basic transport version), W-3AE (the evacuation version) and W-3AM (the version with float landing gear). Military versions include W-3T (transport), W-3W (armed with a cannon and outriggers for suspended weapons), W-3RM Anakonda (marine, rescue) and W-3RL (land rescue helicopter), which is the subject of this description. The main user of the PZL W-3 helicopter is the Polish armed forces, but the machine was also exported to Algeria, the Czech Republic and the Philippines.
