Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939), pseudonym Witkacy, is an extraordinary figure. Painter, essayist, writer, author of novels such as "Insatiability", "The Only Way Out", "622 Falls of Bunga" and dozens of dramas, including "The Shoemakers", "In a Small Manor". He was also a photographer, theater theorist and philosopher. His philosophy referred to Leibniz's monadology, giving it a completely new character. Witkacy was also an excellent art theorist and philosopher of aesthetics.
In the treatise "New Forms in Painting and the Resulting Misunderstandings", a work on the border of philosophy (ontology), aesthetics and philosophy of art, Witkacy deals with reflections on Pure Art. He includes only painting and music in it, arguing that the content of these fields is not to evoke purely sensual pleasure due to pleasant combinations of colors and sounds, or to present the external world from an individual point of view. The aim of creation is to get rid of the feeling of loneliness and metaphysical terror by objectifying the unity in multiplicity detached from personality.
The last part of the treatise, entitled "On the Disappearance of Metaphysical Feelings in Connection with Social Development", is devoted to philosophical, sociological issues and the decline of art, as Witkacy understood it. It is a deep analysis of the condition of man in modern society and the role of art in his life. This book is not only a read for art lovers, but also for all those who want to understand the complexity of human existence and the search for meaning in the world.
