This is a must-read for anyone who wants to live more consciously and responsibly.

This book makes a valuable contribution to the discussion on sustainable development, offering a sociological perspective on lifestyles. The authors analyze how the prevalence of the concept of ecology can lead to the loss of its sharpness and to its use as a simulation of a reality that is not ecological in essence. For sociology, it is inspiring to trace the manifestations of the "ecologization" of life, which is characterized not only by the superficial application of the principles of shallow ecology but, above all, by the consistent application of the assumptions of deep ecology.

The idea of sustainable development, enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, aims to design and introduce such living conditions that significantly improve its quality, not only in economic terms. It is closely related to alternative lifestyles, which are trying to regulate the relationships between the individual, society, and the environment. These styles are called alternative because they variously contest contemporary ways of life characterized by excessive consumption, haste, and departure from all forms of spiritual development.

Manifestations of this vision of reality include downshifting, holistic simplification, culture jamming, and behaviors such as freegan. One such idea, embedded in an institutional system, is also the idea of the slow-life movement, which slows down life in all its dimensions. This approach is intended to allow people to reflect on the condition of the quality of their lives and the possibilities of improving it at the levels that require it. One of the manifestations of this approach is the growing Cittaslow network, initiated in Italy and now including Polish cities such as Reszel and Bisztynek. Developing a new quality of life for residents is a desirable expression of development success for these cities.
