The Battle of the Niemen, which began on September 20, lasted almost continuously until October 18, 1920, until the armistice. It was one continuous chain of battles, conducted with one consistent guiding thought of the Commander-in-Chief, who consciously combined operational conditions with political postulates: he beat the enemy, drew the borders of the Homeland and forced the enemy to sign an armistice as a prelude to the conclusion of peace.
In the light of later historical research, the Battle of the Niemen should be considered a continuation of the August offensive, which lasted from August 14 to August 23. The four-week break between these main episodes of the Polish military effort in 1920 was not enough to completely reorganize the Soviet army defeated near Warsaw. On the other hand, the Polish army also underwent only a minor and incomplete reorganization, lasting only about two weeks for the longest resting units, and the enemy considered the Polish forces to be so exhausted that not only would they not be able to move forward, but they would not even be able to defend themselves and intended to ultimately attack Poland again. The Niemen offensive takes on the character of an independent battle in the fullest sense of the word.
