Instructions on buildings and church equipment (1577) is a collection of guidelines developed at the request and under the supervision of Cardinal Charles Borromeo (1538-1584). This document, created by clergymen supporting him in the management of the Archdiocese of Milan, is considered the most important document defining the principles of shaping Catholic sacred art in the Tridentine period. The regulations contained therein were used in almost the entire world, trying to adapt the forms of works of art as best as possible to the requirements of the liturgy and to convey the truths of faith through them.

The instructions played a key role in the formulation of modern Latin liturgical-artistic terminology. The first full translation of the Instructions into Polish was equipped with a complete scientific apparatus, and also supplemented with extensive introductions explaining the circumstances of the creation of this work and the issues of its authorship, and defining its place in the artistic writings of the 16th century. The recommendations contained in the Instructions were also confronted with the forms of sacred art realized under the supervision of Borromeo and minor statements on art, formulated by him and in his environment.
