Thematic analysis (TA) is a method of developing, analyzing, and interpreting patterns in a set of qualitative data. It involves systematic processes of coding data to develop themes that are the ultimate analytical goal. The authors named their approach to thematic analysis reflective because its basic characteristic and the factor differentiating the individual varieties of TA is the figure of the subjective, situated, conscious, and questioning researcher, the reflective researcher. Reflexivity means critical reflection on the role of the researcher as well as research practice and process.
This book offers a set of tools – concepts, techniques, practices, and guidelines – for organizing, analyzing, and interpreting a data set. Their good use requires thinking and making choices about other aspects of the project and the research process. The authors explain specific ways in which we map and conceptualize the field of qualitative research. They also provide the knowledge and tools needed to properly conduct reflective TA. However, they assume that readers have some knowledge of qualitative research. This book is a specialist manual, entirely devoted to one analytical approach.
The main goal of the authors was to write an accessible and practical guide for people learning and performing reflective TA. They also wanted to support people teaching and supervising reflective TA. So they wrote a book for two groups of readers: learners of reflective thematic analysis and teachers of thematic analysis or supervisors of researchers. Original title: Thematic Analysis.
