Discover the fascinating world of political values in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Explore the foundations on which Poland was built at that time.

  • In-depth analysis of historical sources
  • Insightful study of political treatises and publicism
  • Reconstruction of ideals of the state and the citizen
  • Interpretation of concepts of homeland and patriotism
  • Presentation of values of law and freedom
  • Broad European context
  • Evolution of understanding political concepts

The authors present the political values functioning in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth primarily, though not exclusively, in the community of politically active noble citizens. They try to recreate them on the basis of a thorough analysis of various sources of treaties and political publicism, public speeches in the Sejm and Sejmiks, but also unofficial statements, private exchanges of views between participants in political life.

The subject of the analysis is, among other things, the ideal of the state as a community of citizens present in political discourse, as well as the contemporary vision of a human-citizen, a member of the political community, and his obligations towards it. The authors also present and interpret the contemporary understanding of the concepts of homeland or patriotism, devoting much attention to the values that are fundamental to the participants in the political life of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, such as law and freedom. They show the analyzed issues not only in a broader European context, but also in various epochs, which allows tracking the evolution in the understanding and assessment of concepts and political ideals.

The series of monographs Culture of the First Republic in dialogue with Europe. Hermeneutics of values presents the cultural heritage of the 15th-18th centuries as an integral, but original part of European culture. The research goal is to recognize the paths and forms of mutual transmission of aesthetic, political and religious values, and to show the axiological structure of Polish culture of ancient epochs in a broad, multilateral comparative context. Cultural texts are studied from an internal perspective as records of acts aimed at understanding values, and from an external perspective as statements engaging in European literary-aesthetic, political and religious discussions. In an intensive dialogue, the culture of the Republic shows not only receptivity to new ideas, but also creativity and dynamism of action in the European area.
