Eugenia Markowa (Gina z Pinkusów Szwarc) was born in Konin in 1895, spent her childhood and youth in Łódź, and died in Paris in 1973. The book she titled "Choice" is a special form of her memoirs written in Polish in the 1950s, then translated into French and published in that language in France in 1961. The Polish version of "Choice" was destroyed by Gina and Marek's daughter, Tereska Torres, in the late 1950s. This publication is therefore a translation from French.

The book covers only a few years of the author's life, her husband's life, and the first period of their child's life, the years 1919-1921. Markowa also included fragments of an intimate diary in her memoirs, which she regularly kept during her Parisian years at the side of her artist husband. Gina's life, described by herself in this publication, initially seemed completely dependent on the fate of Marek Szwarc, an outstanding artist associated with the circle of Jewish artists of the École de Paris, on his decisions and choices. When their child was born in Paris, Gina's fate became inextricably linked to Tereska's life. In the book, the author describes the earliest childhood of her daughter - Teresa Zuzanna, the future famous French journalist and writer Tereska Torres.

The following Parisian years significantly expand and enrich the young woman's life. Marek Szwarc introduces his wife to the circles of the artistic bohemia of Montparnasse in the 1920s, to the issues of contemporary art, the shaping of which she initially only seemed to observe, but in fact was a sensitive recipient and commentator. Both came from Jewish families (Marek Szwarc was born in Zgierz in 1892). Gina's parents were assimilated, wealthy Jews from Łódź, Marek's parents were more orthodox, father Izucher (Isucher) Szwarc was a meritorious social and political activist for the inhabitants of his hometown of Zgierz, a supporter of moderate Jewish assimilation and one of the founders of Zionism formed on Polish soil.
