The Third Republic was born in revolutionary turmoil, with the burden of the past and hopes for the future. The history of the Centre for Eastern Studies, created by Marek Karp, reflects like a lens all the good and bad features of the state and its administration created after 1989 - from organizational chaos and typewriters to professionalism, modern technologies and international contacts. This was possible thanks to the vision and a bit of madness of the "last citizen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania", as Karp was sometimes called. Because his vision of Poland's future had strong foundations in the past.
Karp gathered around him a considerable group of enthusiasts ready to serve the state. For some, eggheads, for others, spies - for over 30 years, OSW analysts have been observing Poland's environment to warn against danger before it hangs over our borders. They do so in the belief that, contrary to what a Russian poet wrote, Russia can be "measured with an arshin", i.e. try to understand the policy of the Kremlin and other countries in the East without emotion. For years, they have also held important state functions, and their knowledge and experience are valued by successive governments and respected abroad.
